Ozark National Scenic Riverways “Beat the Heat” Campaign Leads to 24 Arrests

Van Buren, MO. – During the July 4th weekend this year, Ozark National Scenic Riverways worked together with the US Department of Transportation and local law enforcement to participate in a “Beat the Heat, Drive Sober” campaign, which was meant to deter individuals from taking part in intoxicated operation of vehicles of any kind.

This campaign had results which totaled in 24 arrests, of which 19 of those were for impaired driving, 15 for general intoxication and the remaining 4 being for drug-based intoxication. The remaining arrests were for possession of drugs such as methamphetamine and other illegal narcotics, as well as public intoxication.

During this release of information, the US Park Service wished to advise the public that prescription drugs and over-the-counter cold and sleep medication can impact driving as much as alcohol, and may be treated similarly.
