Prescribed Burn at Jerktail Mountain in Shannon County March 16

Ozark National Scenic Riverways is conducting the Jerktail Mountain Prescribed Burn in cooperation with Pioneer Forest and the L.A.D. Foundation.  This prescribed burn encompasses 1,850 acres and is located in north central Shannon County, southeast of Jerktail Landing on the east side of the Current River.  Park visitors near Jerktail Landing, Two Rivers, or the Broadfoot Fields may notice smoke from the prescribed burn.

It is expected that prescribed fire operations will result in the closure of portions of the Jerktail and Broadfoot Horse Trail loops.

The prescribed fire program at Ozark NSR is conducted by trained and experienced National Park Service fire personnel. One of the primary goals of this project is to provide for firefighter and public safety.  Care will be taken while burning to avoid impacts to visitors and adjacent landowners. People who are not part of the prescribed fire operation should avoid areas of active fire.

Smoke may be visible in the park and along roadways.  Please drive cautiously, reduce your speed, and turn on your headlights.  Watch out for wildlife, fire personnel, and vehicles along roadways. If you are sensitive to smoke, please take measures to limit your exposure.

Some sections of the park or roadways may be temporarily restricted for your safety.

If you would like more information about this prescribed burn, you may contact Park Headquarters at 573-323-4236 or Public Information Officer Dena Matteson at 573-323-4814.
