“My first experience with the Missouri citizen initiative was passing an anti-corruption constitutional amendment,” said Toni Easter, co-founder of the Respect MO Voters Coalition. “I attended meetings, signed the petition, and held a yard party to get others involved. I was proud of the people’s accomplishment, and it broke my heart when it was overturned.”

The cross-partisan group will hold at least 25 Town Halls across Missouri to gather as much citizen input as possible before drafting a constitutional amendment they plan to add to the November 2026 Missouri ballot. The amendment will ban politicians from interfering with initiatives that voters have already passed, attacking citizens’ ability to use the initiative process, and using misleading language on ballots to manipulate voters.

This campaign stands out because it was founded and its departments are being led by volunteers.

The Town Hall will include a short presentation by Lindsay Browning of the Respect MO Voters Coalition. Attendees will be asked for their input through a survey and open conversation. Organizers will also share information on how attendees can get more involved with the coalition.

WHAT:

Respect MO Voters Coalition Town Hall in West Plains. This is the twenty-second of at least 25 Town Halls planned statewide to gather input from Missourians about a forthcoming constitutional amendment banning politicians from undermining the citizen initiative process, a century-old Constitutional freedom that has been used by Missourians across the political spectrum.

WHEN:
Friday, March 28, 2025, 4:00 pm

WHERE:
West Plains Public Library
750 W Broadway St, West Plains, MO 65775

WHO:

  • Lindsay Browning of the Respect Missouri Voters campaign

  • 20-30 local citizens providing input on the amendment

WHY:

During the past session, the Missouri legislature placed deceptive language on the 2024 ballot, and attempted to pass multiple bills that would effectively gut the ballot initiative process, stripping away a Constitutional right from Missourians.

“The Citizen initiative petition is a sacred and trusted Constitutional right that Missourians have freely exercised for over a century. It gives voters the freedom to determine the laws that govern us and serves as a fundamental check and balance on the legislature,” said Bob Johnson, former State Senator (R-Lee’s Summit).
