Salem, MO. Sheltered Workshop Bouncing Back After Devastating Fire

Salem, MO. – Earlier this week, tragedy struck the Sheltered Workshop in Salem, MO. in the form of a fire that claimed a building and the supplies inside, which included all the toys in a local toy drive.

Not even a day later, a large number of organizations from around the area gathered resources to donate to the group in order to assist.

This donation included a round of coats and undergarments as a part of Ozark Radio’s Give Local First efforts, made possible through the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Travis Smith.

Now, those with the workshop have stated that they’ve received tens of thousands of toys due to the efforts of those who donated.

Still, there are some concerns for the 32 people who worked in the Sheltered Workshop. Mike Godi with the Scenic River Industries Sheltered Workshop says that “…the real tragedy is the loss of the center and the displacement of the disabled people.” Those who still wish to donate are asked to move forward with this in mind if possible, but that donations are still being accepted for the toy drive.

One way you can help is to donate food items to a food drive organized by the Salem Chamber of Commerce, meant to benefit these workers. For further information, dial 573-729-6900.
