School Board votes to change SCCC to Southern Missouri Technical Institute

West Plains, MO. – On Tuesday, the West Plains School District Board of Education approved a name change for the South Central Career Center.

The school board has had discussions and votes on the name change throughout the school year, with a proposed name being refused by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). During their May board meeting, the board approved SCCC to change its name to Southern Missouri Technical Institute to be effective July 1, 2023.

Approval of the name change through DESE will still be required for the change to be final.

The board also discussed new business including the School Bus Inspection that was performed in March by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The district has 27 buses in its fleet, and one bus had minor issues that were being addressed.

There is also a discussion of the potential for the Ozark Conference and the Central Ozark Conference to combine into a mega-conference. IF this moves forward, it would most likely not occur until the ’24-’25 school year.

The next board meeting is scheduled for June 27, 2023. The meetings are held monthly on the third Tuesday of each month at the West Plains High School Library.
