Severe Storms and Flooding Expected to Impact Missouri Roadways

The Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri State Highway Patrol are urging residents and travelers to prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

As flash flooding and hazardous road conditions are likely, motorists should take extra precautions:

  • Stay Informed: Monitor your local weather forecast and listen to radio stations while traveling for severe weather alerts.
  • Anticipate Flooded Roadways: Flash flooding can develop rapidly, even in unexpected locations such as interstates and town roads.
  • Be Cautious of Debris: Heavy rain can wash debris onto roads, creating additional hazards.
  • Never Drive Through Floodwaters: Just 12 inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away, and roadways beneath floodwaters may be completely washed out.
  • Avoid Downed Power Lines: If your vehicle comes into contact with power lines, remain inside and call for help.
  • Drive Carefully at Night: Reduced visibility makes it harder to spot flooded areas and debris. Slow down to lower the risk of hydroplaning.
  • Obey Road Closures & Barricades: Driving around MoDOT barricades is illegal and extremely dangerous.

Check Road Conditions Before Traveling

For real-time road conditions and closures, drivers should check the MoDOT Traveler Information Map:

The Traveler Information Map is updated regularly, but conditions can change rapidly due to flash floods. Drivers are encouraged to check frequently while on the road. The free MoDOT app is also available for download on smart devices.

Emergency Assistance

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds motorists that driving into floodwaters is not only dangerous for yourself but also puts first responders at risk. If you experience an emergency or witness someone in need of aid, call 911 or dial *55 from your cell phone for assistance.

Residents and travelers are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as Missouri prepares for this severe weather event.
