Severe Weather Preparedness Week Continues: Flooding

Today is the last day of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, a yearly event to help remind and educate citizens of the dangers of the weather for this time of the year. Each day of this week is centered around a specific theme that represents one of the results of extreme weather.

Today’s theme is one we’re all more aware of after the summer of 2016: flooding. Flooding can happen anywhere in the US, with recent events showing us it can even have a large impact on our corner of the Ozarks.

During this time of the year when torrential rains become more prevalent, it is good practice to make sure you have an emergency kit with enough food, water, and medicine to last for three days. Your emergency kit should also include things such as batteries, blankets, flashlights, rubber gear, and a first aid kit.

Additionally, one can help to prepare their home for torrential rainfall with sandbags. You can also have a professional install check-valves in plumbing to prevent flood waters from backing up into the drains of your home.

Remember that standard homeowners insurance does not cover flooding, and stay informed on what your policy protects against. Remember that many changes to policy take at least 30 days to go into effect.
