Shafer to serve 10 year prison sentence for manslaughter of Dora man

Allen R. Shafer of West Plains has been sentenced to 10 years in in the death of Devon Massey of Dora. Shafer entered an Alford plea* to the court on July 16, 2021.

For the charge of Involuntary Manslaughter-1st Degree, Shafer was sentenced to 10 years in prison and for the charge of Tampering With Motor Vehicle – 1st Degree he was sentenced for 7 years. These sentences will run concurrently, meaning, Shafer will have completed both sentences in 10 years.

The trial was moved to Taney County in August of 2020 under Judge Jeffrey Merrell.

The Ozark County prosecutor has filed charges against a man in the shooting death of Devon Massey, 22, of Dora. The shooting happened Saturday night near Dora.

According to the Ozark County Sheriff’s Department, officers found Massey shot to death around 9 p.m. on County Road 195. It took authorities several hours to locate where the shooting happened.

Deputies arrested Allen R. Shafer, of West Plains, on Sunday. He faces charges of first-degree murder, armed criminal action and tampering with a motor vehicle.

Sheriff Darin Reed says Shafer, Massey and an unnamed witness had been in a vehicle together before the shooting. Shafer called 911 after the alleged shooting and explained he had been in an altercation. Deputies arrested him shortly after the call.
