VFW Auxiliary 5993 is preparing to reopen sponsorship opportunities for Ava’s Military Tribute Banner Program within the next week.
The program, organized through VFW Auxiliary 5993 with assistance from VFW Post 5993 and the City of Ava, honors veterans with ties to the local community. The banners are displayed along Springfield Road and Jefferson Street from Memorial Day through Veterans Day.
According to Gail Huffman, sponsorships will be open from now until February for those wishing to order new banners.
Banners may honor any veteran with ties to the local community. The veteran does not have to have served in a foreign war, remained in the military for a certain length of time or lived in Ava, as long as they served and have a connection to the area.
Each banner sponsorship is $200. The banners are displayed for multiple years, and when they are ready to be retired, they are returned to the family or veteran.

All profits stay local and help fund programs supported by the auxiliary, including veterans’ assistance, scholarships for local students, Wreaths Across America and other projects.
