Suspect in Alton Standoff Makes Initial Court Appearance

A counsel status hearing this week for an Alton man who had a 22-hour standoff with law enforcement in Alton in early December. Daniel Johnson had his initial court appearance on Friday.

Howell County SWAT and West Plains Police Special Response Team units were requested to assist with an armed barricaded subject in Alton by the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office on the afternoon of December 5. While on scene, crisis negotiators from the Howell County Sheriff’s Office and the West Plains Police Department attempted negotiations. Johnson, responded by firing at officers from the residence. The Missouri State Highway Patrol SWAT from Troop D was contacted for mutual aid, due to the duration of the standoff. Johnson was taken into custody without incident at approximately 11 a.m. on December 6.

Johnson faces several felony charges and is being held in the Douglas County Jail.
