On August 20, 2026, Lt. Nelson conducted a traffic stop near the North Junction in Ava. The driver, Daniel Young, was found to be operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license. When Lt. Nelson advised Young he was under arrest, Young resisted, prompting Captain Butterworth of the Ava Police Department to respond and assist.
During the struggle, Lt. Nelson sustained an injury to his bicep. A medical examination later determined he suffered a partial bicep tear. Young reportedly experienced a seizure during the altercation and was transported by ambulance for treatment.
A warrant was subsequently issued for Young on charges of second‑degree felony assault on a special victim, resisting/interfering with arrest, operating a vehicle without a valid license, and refusal to identify as a witness. Sgt. Aaron Box arrested Young on the warrant on August 21. His bond was set at $25,000 cash only.
