From the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department:
On August 31, 2026, Lt. Nelson and Deputy Evans served rent and possession court papers at the 1101 Martin Apartments. Upon entering the apartment, they found two individuals who were not on the lease and whom management was unaware lived there.
The occupants were identified as John Rieken, age 39, and Brittany Young, age 38, both from Ava. Deputies discovered several baggies of methamphetamine in the apartment along with digital scales, all of which field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

It was revealed that Brittany Young had been in the bathroom attempting to dispose of the methamphetamine and other evidence.
Warrants were issued for Brittany Young for the following charges: delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), tampering with physical evidence, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful use of a weapon. Her bond was set at $2,500 cash only.
A warrant was also issued for John Rieken for similar charges: delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), tampering with physical evidence, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful use of a weapon. His bond was set at $5,000 cash only.
Sheriff Degase would like to thank the Ava Police Department for their assistance with this case.
