Two Businesses Impacted by Scam, Says West Plains PD

West Plains, MO. – Yesterday, the West Plains Police Department announced that a scam has been making the rounds within the area that has impacted two local businesses.

In these incidents, scammers have placed large orders for construction materials using fraudulent credit cards. The transactions initially appear to be approved. The merchandise is then picked up by third-party delivery drivers, commonly known as “hotshot” drivers.

Days after the purchase is made it is then flagged as fraudulent, leaving the businesses without materials, nor the funds for them.

The Police Department warns that businesses should be alert for the following red flags:

• Large purchases from unfamiliar customers
• Orders involving significant quantities of construction materials
• Requests for immediate pickup by third-party drivers
• Customers who are unwilling or unable to verify their identity or payment information

The Department additionally warns that any suspicious transaction should be verified with a payment processor before merchandise is released. If you or someone you know could be the victim of fraudulent activity, contact the Police Department by dialing 417-256-2244.
