Two in Douglas County Jail Receive Additional Assault Charges While Incarcerated

Ava, MO. – On July 24th, a pair of female inmates of the Douglas County Jail were able to collect felony assault charges while incarcerated.

This happened due to a conflict between inmates, which was investigated after injuries were checked on both sides. A female inmate was found to have a swollen lip and redness near her left eye. Meanwhile, another inmate identified as Courtney Melton, 32 of Clever, was observed to have a bleeding finger.

A review of footage was performed, and it was shown that Melton initiated the assault by pushing the other inmate, hitting her in the face with a phone, slamming their head into a wall, and continuing the assault. Another inmate, Kirsten Johnson, 20 of Ava, participated by holding the victim’s leg to keep her pinned while encouraging the fight.

Both Melton and Johnson have received Felony 1st Degree Assault charges as a result of this event.
