West Plains, MO. – Two local students, one from the Dora R-lll School District and one from the West Plains High School were recently selected as the top 20 artists in the Missouri Congressional Art Competition. This competition is an opportunity for the students and the public to recognize the artistic talent of high school students in Missouri’s 2nd District and throughout the nation. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 and since then, close to one million students have been involved in the nationwide competition.
Both students were invited by Congressman Jason Smith to attend an exclusive art reception at the capital on May 2nd. At the art reception, the overall Best of Show winner for Missouri will be announced. Their art will be hung in the Capital Building for a year until the next year of the Missouri Congressional Art Competition Students. Each winning artist will receive round-trip airfare to attend the Congressional Art Competition Reception in Washington, D.C. Over the past several years the overall winner of the competition has also had their piece of artwork displayed at the United States Capital Building.
Natasha Slavik won best of show in the Dora Art Show and was in the top 20 pieces of the state with her tiger drawing.
Emily Ritter has received recognition as one of the top 20 pieces of art with her drawing.
