Within the past two weeks, several people have contacted the West Plains Police Department and have said they received a phone call from a possible scam. Each one shared the same similarities; a large sum of money has been won or a brand new car. Some have even been threatened with jail time by someone pretending to be an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent.
With this rise in reporting of scam phone calls, the West Plains Police Department would like to remind you of some helpful tips. If you receive one of these phone calls, never provide personal information to anyone you do not know. Never give your home or work addresses. Never provide them with money or access to your bank information/account(s).
These phone calls can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission online or by phone at 1-877-382-4357. Be mindful, be aware, and don’t be a victim to scammers.
