Wednesday Baxter County Manhunt Ends with Suspect in Custody

Mountain Home, AR. – A Mountain Home man has been arrested after a manhunt on Wednesday and the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement on the arrest.

This began with a homeowner on County Road 99 in the Northern part of Baxter County reporting two men stealing things from his yard at 10:49am. The homeowner watched them flee in a silver vehicle and got the license number after chasing after the suspects. On County Road 36, the two suspects stopped and shot at the victim with a handgun before continuing to flee.

Radio traffic alerted citizens in the area to the events, and information was given to the Sheriff’s Office on the location of the vehicle. The vehicle was found by Sergeant Brian Davis, and one occupant was still inside, who attempted to flee on foot when he was found. Canine tracking teams and a helicopter were dispatched to locate the suspect, who eventually barricaded themselves into a home on County Road 35.

After a stand-off, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody at 4:30pm. Terry Lee Shumate, 39 of Mountain Home was booked on multiple charges, including Felony Fleeing, Felony Felon in Possession of a firearm, Felony Aggravated Assault, Misdemeanor Criminal Trespassing, Misdemeanor Theft of Property, Misdemeanor Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Expired Tags, No Insurance, Driving on a Suspended License, Parole Violation, and Habitual Offender.

Shumate is being held on a $250,000 bond, and investigation is continuing in order to locate the second suspect.

In assistance on this event were the Mountain Home PD, the Arkansas State Police, the Arkansas Division of Corrections, and the Ozark County Sheriff’s Office.
