Travelers along US Highway 63 may have noticed new, towering power poles recently installed as part of West Plains’ newly completed 69 kV Transmission Line Project. This nearly four-mile project, a partnership with Sho-Me Power, aims to significantly improve electrical connectivity and reliability for the city.
The transmission line connects the Sho-Me Substation to the Lanton Road Substation, featuring upgraded lines and 3-phase primary distribution. These improvements are designed to provide enhanced reliability, increased capacity for growth, and quicker restoration during power outages.
The project, completed in collaboration with contractors Henkels & McCoy and engineers from Toth and Associates, incorporates advanced infrastructure that includes taller poles for improved safety and easier maintenance. These taller clearances allow for quicker repairs and additional rerouting options to expedite power restoration.
Utility Director Shayne Eades highlighted the benefits of the upgrades, explaining that the new transmission lines and larger breakers can handle higher electrical loads, accommodating the growing demand from new developments, businesses, and residential expansions in the area. Additionally, the enhanced breakers can manage higher fault currents, reducing the risk of failures during overloads or faults. Eades says the upgrade is a crucial step forward as we work to meet the needs of our growing community.
The successful completion of this project marks a significant milestone in the city’s efforts to support future growth while ensuring reliable electricity for residents and businesses alike.
