West Plains man causes multi-vehicle accident, fled and rolled vehicle

West Plains, MO – On Wednesday, July 27 at 6:55 PM, a multiple vehicle traffic crash was reported at the intersection of U.S. Highway 63 and State Route CC in which one of the involved vehicles had fled down State Route CC.

While enroute to the scene, officers were advised that a vehicle matching the description had been involved in a roll over traffic crash in the area of State Route CC and Palmer Street. Upon further investigation, it was determined that two occupants of the vehicle had been injured and were later transported by South Howell Ambulance to Ozarks Healthcare.

It was also learned the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene on foot. The Driver was identifield as Mr. Steven Detwiler, 19 of West Plains, and was later located by the Howell County Sheriff’s Office and place under arrest as a result of the investigation. Mr. Detwiler was then placed on a 24-hour hold pending formal charges for Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Injury, Driving While Intoxicated and, Careless and Impudent Driving.

The West Plains Police Department would like to thank the Howell County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.

Steven Detwiler had been previously arrested by the Howell County Sheriff’s Office on July 21, 2021 and charged with Armed Criminal Action, Domestic Assault 3rd Degree, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon – Subsection 4 – Exhibiting.
