West Plains Police make statement on recent school threats

West Plains, MO. – The West Plains Police Department has made a post regarding their recent investigations into the recent threats of violence made at and about the West Plains Middle School in recent days.

On February 8th, 2024, at approximately 1940 hours the West Plains Police Department received several reports of a social media post containing information on a possible threat to students and staff of the West Plains R-7 School District.
 
One of the posts from a community member stated a juvenile brought a gun to school and threatened other juveniles with it. It also indicated that the juvenile said their friends would finish the job. This is just a summary of some of the posts.
 
Another post told people not to go to school because there might be a school shooting. This is just a summary of some of the posts.
 
The Howell County Sheriff’s Office investigated an incident on February 7th that took place at the West Plains Middle School. A juvenile reportedly had a gun and made threatening statements to other juveniles. The juvenile did NOT have a gun in his possession then. This was confirmed by the West Plains Middle School Administration and the School Resource Officer.
 
The West Plains School District is following its policies for discipline in this matter. The Howell County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating their case.
 
We investigated the report of new threats but determined that this was old information referring to the incident on February 7th. We have NO reason to believe that the West Plains School District is in any immediate danger.
 
Information like this should be reported to law enforcement immediately. If we receive any information like this, we will investigate it to the fullest to ensure the safety of our children and community.
