The City of West Plains is seeking residents to serve on the Charter Review Commission.
Every 10 years, the City’s Charter is reviewed to ensure it continues to meet the needs of our community. The charter serves as West Plains’ local constitution, outlining how city government is organized, what powers it has and how decisions are made.
The Charter Review Commission is made up of at least nine qualified voters who are residents of the City of West Plains. This is an opportunity for community members to help shape the future of local government by reviewing the charter and recommending any needed changes. Any recommended amendments will ultimately be presented to West Plains voters for consideration during the April 2027 election.

What is the City Charter?
The Charter is the city’s governing document. It establishes the structure of city government, including the mayor, city council and city administrator, defines the City’s powers and outlines how decisions are made.
Why are we reviewing it?
The charter requires a comprehensive review at least once every 10 years. The last review was completed in 2020.
Who is eligible to serve?
Any qualified voter who resides within the City of West Plains is encouraged to apply.
Do I need to be an expert on government?
No. The commission is looking for residents who care about their community and are willing to participate in thoughtful discussions. A variety of perspectives is encouraged.
What’s the time commitment?
The Charter Review Commission members will meet once per month for no more than a few hours each time to discuss sections of our charter and recommend any changes. The goal is to have recommendations put to voters in April 2027.
