The National Weather Service is planning to make changes to their way of referring to extreme weather events ahead of the 2024-2025 winter season, and Wind Chill Advisories and their like are being phased out.
According to the National Weather Service, this change is being made to better reflect the dangers of cold temperatures that do not contain the added threat of precipitation.
The new terms that are being implemented effective immediately are “Extreme Cold Watch, Warning, and Advisory”, rather than the “Wind Chill” term used previously.
Other winter weather terms will continue unchanged.
