Woman Charged with Theft of Benefits Pays Back $30k Received Fraudulently

Mountain Home, AR. – The Former Baxter County Sheriff’s Office Employee who was arrested last year in February for fraudulently receiving unemployment money has presented in full the amount of money she had taken in court on Monday, October 16th.

In the original case, Michelle Hood of Norfork, who was 52 at the time of arrest, was found to have illegally received $30,762.00 in unemployment benefits while employed with the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office. Investigation had been initiated when someone with the Baxter County Government had noticed that Hood was receiving unemployment benefits.

Investigation was performed and aided by several agencies, including Arkansas Workforce Services, the Arkansas State Police, local Baxter County Government, and the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office.

In court, Hood entered a guilty plea to her charge of Class B Felony Theft of Public Benefits, only resolving now as funds were being gathered to pay back as restitution.
