JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Agriculture has awarded funds to 12 projects that aim to address food insecurity within food deserts throughout Missouri, including one in the local area.
The West Plains Community Garden received funding to increase the number of available community garden beds used by low-income residents. The funding was made available through the Food Desert Agriculture Matching Grant Program.
Department officials say food insecurity is an issue facing citizens across the Show-Me State, including one in every five children.
Projects must be completed by May 1, 2020.
