WPPD offers winter weather tips

This weekend, a large air mass from the Arctic is due to set in our area and remain for some time. Forecasters are calling for extremely frigid temperatures throughout the coming days with highs dropping into the mid-teens and lows in the single digits with negative wind chills.

Here is some information to keep in mind for this extreme weather:

  • Dress appropriately for the weather and do not stay outside for long periods of time.
    • Hypothermia is a very serious, life-threatening condition which occurs when the body does not have the ability to handle cold temperatures.
  • Make sure your outside animals have adequate shelter and access to fresh water and food.
    • When in doubt, bring them inside.
  • DO NOT use exterior heat sources such as propane heaters or charcoal grills to heat your residence.
    • Gases released from the burning of propane and charcoal are toxic and can be fatal.
  • Make sure water pipes are properly insulated or leave the faucet(s) running with a trickle to ensure water pipes do not freeze and/or burst.
  • Check on elderly friends and loved ones

We want everyone to be as prepared as possible for this arctic blast over the next few days. Currently, the City of West Plains is working on opening warming shelters which can be utilized by members of the community. More information will be released when available. As always, the officers of the West Plains Police Department are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. If you need us, we’ll be there.
