WPPD shares vacation tips

Summer time is officially here which means you or someone you know may be planning a vacation. Nothing is more defeating to a good vacation than returning to a burglarized home. The West Plains Police Department would like to share some helpful tips for those who are planning to travel out of the area this summer.

  • Make sure your home is locked and secure before leaving. This includes all doors, windows, garage doors, and anywhere else your house could be accessed. Be sure to move all valuable items inside your home such as bicycles, lawn chairs, and anything else that could be easily carried off.
  • Let a trusted neighbor or family member know when you will be gone and ask them to check on your house periodically. Have them pick up mail, packages, newspapers, and any other deliveries while you are gone or have the post office hold mail for you.
  • Install a simple home security system such as a doorbell camera which can be accessed by your cell phone or mobile device. Also leave a couple of lights on inside the house.
  • Community members can also contact the Police Department and request extra patrol for their residence while on vacation. This is a service provided by the Police Department of which some may not be aware.

If you are planning a vacation, we wish you safe travels and a fun, enjoyable vacation! Share these helpful tips and don’t let you or someone you know or love be a victim.
