WPPD will have extra patrols out on Halloween night

On Halloween (Saturday, October 31), the West Plains Police Department will have extra patrols out during the Halloween evening.  The extra patrol will be providing constant patrol through the neighborhoods within the City for added safety of our Trick and Treaters.

The West Plains Police Department would like to remind you to stay safe if you and your child choose to Trick or Treat or participate in Halloween activities!

The West Plains Police Department wants to share some basic safety tips to make certain we have a safe evening out.

  1. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right, and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
  2. Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, do not run, across the street.
  3. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
  4. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to
the left as possible.  Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
  1. Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

Costumes for a Safe Halloween

  1. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
  2. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
  3. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  4. When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Below Are Some CDC Guidelines for a Safe Halloween

  1. Wash hands before handling treats.
  1. Wear A Mask
  2. Make your cloth Mask part of your costume.
  1. A costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask.
  1. Stay at least six feet away from others who do not live with you.
  1. Wash your hands:
  • Bring hand sanitizer with you and use it after touching objects or other people.
  • Use sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Parents supervise young children using hand sanitizer.
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when you get home and before you eat any treats.

Driver’s Extra Safely on Halloween

  1. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

The West Plains Police Department will have a large presence in the community this weekend and encourage everyone to report any suspicious activity. The West Plains Police Department would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween.
