KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City police say an off-duty officer who said he had fired shots at an intruder inside his home has left the department amid an investigation that was unable to substantiate the officer’s story.
Police said Wednesday that an investigation into “any potential criminal wrong-doing” was ongoing. The case is expected to be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review.
“Police have investigated the shooting, and the evidence does not support the off-duty officer’s claim that there was an intruder in his home,” police said in a statement. “The officer has voluntarily separated from the KCPD.”
Police initially said that the officer came on his radio around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 and asked for help. The officer said he was alone in his home when he heard sounds, went downstairs and found an unknown man inside. The release says the officer fired multiple shots at the intruder because he feared for his safety and then ran from the scene.
Police at the time said they searched the blocks around the home and checked with hospitals but did not locate anyone involved in the incident.
