George Ray Underwood, age 65 of Myrtle, MO, was born August 7, 1957, in Myrtle, MO. George passed away June 12, 2023, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS.
Mr. Underwood was sheriff of Oregon County, MO, from 2008-2016. He also served his country in the 101 Airborne Division in United States Army. Additionally, he worked for the Florida Department of Corrections for many years, retiring as an assistant warden. Mr. Underwood served on numerous boards within the community. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending time on the farm and the Eleven Point River.
Mr. Underwood is survived by his wife, Deborah of Myrtle, MO, his daughter Amy and son-in-law Matthew Barton of Saint Joseph, MO, and one grandchild, Samuel George Barton. He is also survived by three sisters, Anna Lou Underwood of Springfield, MO, Rita Brewer of Cherokee Village, AR, and Doris Sue Palmer and husband Chris of King Fisher, OK, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Underwood was preceded in death by his parents, Dorris George Underwood and Louise (Shilvock) Underwood Presnell along with two sisters, Phyllis Underwood and Dorothy Ledbetter.
Funeral services will be 11am Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Clary Funeral Home in Thayer, MO, with Bro. Dale Skyles officiating. Visitation will be 10am-11am on Friday, just prior to the service. A private burial will follow on the family farm in Myrtle, MO.
