Janet Louise Hurtado, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on June 7, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO. She passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Janet was born October 4, 1946, in Alton, MO, to Alyne Davis and was raised by her maternal grandparents, Hallett and Evie Norman. Janet helped tend their locally famous strawberry patch, where she learned the value of hard work and family. Though life took Janet to other places over the years, Alton was always where her heart belonged. It was the community she loved, the place she called home, and where many of her fondest memories were made.
Janet was one of three children and is survived by her brothers, Ronnie Davis and David Davis. Among the many blessings in Janet’s life was her lifelong friendship with Brenda Bennett. Friends since childhood, the two shared countless memories, laughs, conversations, and life’s milestones together.
On December 29, 1965, Janet married Danny Hurtado, the love of her life and lifelong partner. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family. They shared 53 wonderful years of marriage before Danny’s passing. Their union was blessed with 5 children: Kimberlin Palmer, Bill (Rita) Hurtado, Brad Hurtado, Robbie Hurtado, and Marty Hurtado. Along the way, they were blessed to welcome Cathy Myers into their hearts as another cherished daughter.
Janet was a very hard worker. She was a cook at Head Start for 10 years, a cook on the riverboat for 10 years, and a caregiver at TJ’s Swift’s House for over 20 years. Janet was known as one of the best cooks in Alton. Few things brought her more joy than preparing large meals for her family and friends and gathering loved ones around her table. Janet loved her houseplants and spending time outdoors tending her flowers and yard plants. She enjoyed spending time on her deck with family and friends, drinking coffee, playing cards, and watching birds and other wildlife. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dog, Buddy. Janet found joy in life’s simple pleasures. More than anything, Janet was the very definition of pure love. She loved without judgment, without expectations, and without ever asking for anything in return. There was nothing a family member could do that would make her stop loving them or cause her to be disappointed in them. She had the biggest and softest heart, always offering comfort, understanding, and acceptance to those around her. If everyone loved a little more like Janet, the world would be a much better place. Her unconditional love will remain one of the greatest gifts she leaves behind.
Janet’s family was her most prized possession in life, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Known lovingly as “Nanny Jan, she was the heart of her family. She had 15 grandchildren: Tonya Willard, Tara McIntire, Charli Roberts, Mekiah Hurtado, Cora Capps, Kimberly Johnson, Kristie Harrill, Kyle Hurtado, Bethany Waggoner, Brittany Hubbard, Guymon Hurtado, Jeff Myers, Greg Myers, Tony Myers, and Danielle Williams. She was also blessed with 22 great-grandchildren.
Janet was preceded in death by her mother, Alyne Davis; her grandparents, Hallett and Evie Norman; her husband, Danny Hurtado; her son, Robbie Hurtado; her daughter-in-law, Rita Hurtado; and her granddaughter, Kimberly Johnson. Janet’s family takes comfort in knowing that her legacy of love will live on through
them.
