Mary Joan (Smith) Blackburn, was born on October 17, 1933, on a farm on the current river. She departed this life on November 2, 2020, at the age of 87.
Joan attended school in Eminence, Missouri, graduating in 1950. She enjoyed growing up in our special community and would sometimes remark, “I had the best childhood any kid could ever have.”
Joan attended beauty college in Springfield, Missouri, and operated her own salon in Eminence for three years.
On April 12, 1954, Joan married Jack Gordon Blackburn. To this union five children were born, Debra Ann, John Mark, Matthew Chilton, David F., and Jack G., Jr.
Jack and Joan spent many years rearing their children both here and abroad as Jack’s job required. Joan later resided for many years in Jefferson City, Missouri. There, she enjoyed long walks and meeting friends for coffee. Current events and politics were common topics of discussion. Joan resided the past ten years in Mountain View Senior Housing.
Above all, Joan’s favorite role was that of “Granny Jo”. Loving, caring for, and celebrating her grandchildren, without a doubt, was her greatest joy.
As is the case with every loved one lost, we her family, have a treasure trove of memories to cherish.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Debra Ann Blackburn of Eminence, MO; sons, John Mark Blackburn of Eminence, MO, Matthew Chilton Blackburn of Eminence, MO, David F. Blackburn of Springfield, MO, and Jack G. Blackburn, Jr. of Willard, MO; six grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Chet, Joy, Jackson, and Oliver; and six great-grandchildren, Hailey, Kellie, Carter, Nico, Henry, and Thomas.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 2020, in New Eminence Cemetery, Eminence, Missouri with Pastor Allen Bates officiating under the direction of Yarber Mortuary, Eminence, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the West Eminence Christian Church. The family also respectfully requests that any gifts of food be shared with a food pantry.
