Vernie M. Cain

Vernon “Vernie” Maxine Cain, 100 of Cabool, MO passed away on July 11, 2024 at her home.  She was born on April 29, 1924 in Augusta, KS the daughter of Guy and Chloe Helen (Morehead) Zuck.

The family moved from Kansas to Cabool in 1940.  During the war, Vernie moved to Marion, IN to work in a defense factory where she worked as a solderer on radios.  There she met her future husband, Francis Cain who was working as a line inspector at the factory.  They were united in marriage on May 8, 1943 and later that year moved back to the farm on highway 181 after Francis was discharged from the Army.  In 1959, the family moved to the house on Garst Street.

Vernie worked at the shoe factory for many years before retiring.  Her favorite song was Whispering Hope, she was proud of winning first place in the seventh grade for singing that song in a singing contest.  Some of her favorite loves and passions were walking at the gymnasium track, dancing (which she continued to do at her 100th birthday celebration), St. Louis Cardinals baseball and her favorite player, Yadier Molina.  Earlier in life she was an avid bowler, winning many trophies.  She could also be found running the Methodist Church yard sales with her good friend, Jo Palmer.  She was known for her quick wit and smile.  Vernie met many friends during her journey.

Vernie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis; two brothers, Chet and Melvin; two sisters, Violet Fisher and Frieda Morris and two sons, Danny and Brad.  She is survived by her son, Brent of Cabool; daughter, Darlene of Arvada, CO; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  A loving and wonderful mother, she will be missed by all.
