(St. Louis) A week after shocking their fanbase with the firing of manager Mike Shildt, the St. Louis Cardinals announced his replacement this morning at a news conference. Oliver Marmol becomes the 51st manager in team history and, at age 35, the youngest manager in the majors.
The Cardinals drafted Marmol in the sixth round of the 2007 major league draft. He has worked his way through the Cardinal system, serving as Mike Shildt’s bench coach the past 3 seasons.

Other candidates for the position were first base coach Stubby Clapp and former Cardinals Skip Schumaker and Matt Holiday. Neither Marmol or other potential candidates have managed at the major league level.
