COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Women’s Basketball junior guard Mama Dembele is set to represent her home country of Spain in the 2022 FIBA U20 Women’s Basketball European Championship, July 8-16 in Sopron, Hungary.
Dembele and the Spanish national team will begin group play at 6:30 a.m. on Friday against Lithuania. The following day, Spain will take on Bulgaria at 8:45 a.m. and will close out the group round at 6 a.m. Sunday against Poland.
Last year, Dembele guided her home country to the quarterfinal round of the U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Hungary. The Manlleu, Spain native, averaged 3.0 points, 1.3 assists and 1.0 rebounds.
Dembele also competed on the world stage at the 2019 U18 European Championships, averaging 3.3 points and 3.7 assists per game.
In 2018, the junior helped lead Spain to a bronze medal finish and earned All-Star recognition at the U16 European Championships after averaging 5.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game.
Dembele started all 31 games for the Tigers during her sophomore campaign and averaged 5.2 points and 2.3 rebounds. The playmaking guard ranked 10th in the Southeastern Conference with 3.6 assists per contest and finished 19th among SEC participants with 44 steals.
