KANSAS CITY, Mo.— Drury shortstop DJ McNew belted two home runs as the Panthers ended their series with Rockhurst with a 10-3 win over Hawks at Loyola Park in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday.
Drury improved to 8-10 and 8-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks went to 11-9 and 9-9 in the league.
The Panthers got on the board with two runs in the third inning on RBI-hits by Brant Schaffitzel and Clayton Engel. An inning later, McNew slammed a solo home run, Aaron Mann drove in a run with an infield single, then Engel had two RBI’s with a double that put Drury in front 6-0.
McNew’s second home run in the game came in the fifth inning with a two-run shot to left-field. The junior from Mountain Grove went 3 for 5 at the plate with three runs scored, two homers, and four RBI’s.
Drury outfielder Ethan Owens went 3 for 4 with a run, an RBI, and a walk.
Kaleb Schmidt (2-1) got the win for the Panthers, going 7 innings allowing five hits and three runs with no walks and six strikeouts. Michael Hellman (1-2) took the loss for the Hawks.
Drury will face Missouri State on Tuesday in the first regular season meeting ever between the two programs. Game time is 6:30 pm at Hammons Field and features a special $2 admission for students with a college ID.
