Free throw shooting causes Grizzlies to fall in matchup with State Fair.

Summary:

The Missouri State West Plains Grizzly Basketball Team faced the State Fair Roadrunners at home on Saturday night, January 25th, 2025. While the Grizzlies had a great first start to the game they fell by one point to the Roadrunners by a Final Score of 64-63.

1st Half: First point of the game scored by The Grizzlies with a long three point shot from Ryan Richardson. State Fair turns the ball over and Grizzlies go on a run with sores by #20, Blayne Harris & a good two hander by #33, Lionel Kiumwimba. Kiumwimba is not only scoring but doing a great job getting the ball back. #15, Daniel Garza scores the first point for the State Fair Roadrunners but Grizzlies continue to get a slew of steals here in the first half. #13 Ethan Smith for the Grizzlies with a nice three as the Grizzly lead. #23, Chin Hanson for the roadrunners score the second two pointer of the night, but rebounded by the Grizzlies. A pass from #5, Shaun Glass to 0,Jaylon Hyson but they will cause a foul on #15, Garza for the roadrunners and maintain possession. Hyson continues to show remarkable hussle being able to cause fouls and not pick up a foul himself. #5, Shaun Glass gets it, cuts down the left side and scores, Roadrunners will pick it up. Stolen back by Glass who puts in the thirteen footer. #13, Jon Brandtner comes in for the roadrunners and scores his first point. 

 

Stolen back by #33, Kumwimba and makes it a 21-11, ten point ballgame with Grizzlies maintaining the lead. Roadrunners take it back as Grizzlies only have two turnovers so far. A pass from #25, Sam Bradford to #13, Brandtner makes another two hander. Next, Grizzly possession gets taken by #33, Kiumwimba who takes it in on another two hander as the Grizzlies now lead a six point game, 23-19. State Fair almost gets off on a run but stolen by #3, Jonathan White for another three pointer. Ball to Shaun Glass with a great, left hander. He gets to go to the line and shoots two. #25, Bradford on the next possession for the Roadrunners. Grizzlies will cause a foul call on the next rebound and send #3, Jonathan White two the line for two free throws. #10, Mosa Osagie shoots two on a foul for the next Roadrunner possession. As the Grizzlies keep taking the ball back, they continue to slay offensive rebounds and scores. Jonathan White now picking up the slack with defensive pressure and taking the ball to the basket several more times. 

HALFTIME- MSU- WP Grizzlies: 36/ State Fair Roadrunners 28

2nd Half: Grizzlies start the second half with a turnover and this allows #10, Osagie to get a layup for the Roadrunners. The Grizzly lead is cut to four as they scramble to get a steal but continually denied by Roadrunners as they score the first six points in the first few minutes of the second half. Finally a steal and #11, Javian Downey scores his first bucket of the night and the first bucket for the Grizzlies in the half. Defense picks back up as #12 Ergie Kougnami blocks the first play on the next offensive possession for the Roadrunners. #20, Riley Whitacker comes into the Grizzlies who passes to Ergie as he scores on a good floater which puts the Grizzlies back up by four. #25 Bradford steals the ball for the Roadrunners and scores off another pass. Ball goes back to Grizzlies as #5, Shaun Glass scores on the good three. Bradford gets another steal for the Roadrunners and gets to go back to the line, making two more free throws. Roadrunners will spread out to a man to man defense as Grizzlies take the next possession. #13 Ethan Smith scores on another bucket as Grizzlies now have jumped back to a seven point lead. Jon Bradtner back in the Game for the roadrunners as he tries to guard Kumwimba as he is now back to the line. Grizzlies are 5-13 on the night in free throw shooting. Roadrunners are able to make more headway as they get it back on the rebound as a floater is scored by #10, Osagie. 

Grizzlies take the first trail of the night as Bradtner gets a rebound and puts the Roadrunners up by two. Grizzlies have now turned over the ball for the seventh time as Ethan Smith throws the ball to the scores table as the Roadrunners continue to stay up by two. Another bucket by #2, Alex Gunnels. Stolen back by Grizzlies as Shaun Glass scores on the easy one handed and another bucket by Bradford as Roadrunners continue to stay up by two, 52-50. #33, Lionel Kiumwimba has it on the next possession, tries for the long shot but is sent to the line. Grizzlies are not having a good luck period at the free throw line as Kiumwimba misses another set of free throws. Riley Whitacker with the next possession for the Grizzlies and also runs into a similar situation as Kiumwimba. Tries for the shot, but misses and misses shots at the throw line. Grizzlies are now down by four, 54-50 with 3:41 to go in the ballgame. Finally punt fake and shot up and good by Ryan Richardson. 

Roadrunners try for a three, but a struggle underneath and they will keep possession. Grizzlies will throw the ball in on the possession, trying to get the lead back and Ryan Richardson will go back to the line after the shot call. Richardson once again missing the next two free throws and shot up and good by #3, Malick Nidaye. Nidaye fouls out and Kiumwimba who makes 1-2 free throws. Grizzlies stil trying for a stop as they are still fighting for the ball. Richardson picks up his second foul of the game, a two possession game with 43.6 seconds to go. Grizzlies try to foul and try for a three to break the two point lead but almost inevitably, the Grizzlies fall by a Final Score of 64-63.

Grizzlies will resume play on Wednesday night as they will face a second matchup with the Poplar Bluff, Three Rivers Raiders. This time at home. Catch game @ 7 PM with Broadcast on 102.5, Hot Country KDY  & Ozark Radio News Facebook & Livestreams.
