The MSU – West Plains Grizzlies (10-20) traveled to Poplar Bluff to face the Three Rivers Raiders (13-17) in the quarterfinal match-up of the Region 16 Tournament. West Plains had a mostly healthy squad, while the Raiders had to deal with two of their starters being out due to injuries.
The scoring pace to start the game was fairly even, as the teams traded baskets during the beginning minutes. Then as the teams started to settle in, the Raiders used their efficient three point shooting to gain separation during the first half. The Raiders were also aided by the Grizzlies being in foul trouble. The Grizzlies trailed by as much as 15 at points during the first half, struggling to get into an offensive rhythm. West Plains fought back to get within 5 points before halftime. The Grizzlies started their comeback with about 5 minutes remaining in the half. Defense aided the Grizzly comeback as they forced turnovers and turned those turnovers into points. The bench players for West Plains also played a key role, as the players who came off the bench scored 27 points combined, in the first half. The Raiders led 46-41 going into the locker room.
The Grizzlies continued their run and took a one point lead early in the second half, 55-54. The Raiders then scored 10 in a row to retake the lead. The Grizzlies would not be able to take a lead again. The Raiders were able to sustain a 10 point lead for most of the rest of the game. The Grizzlies clawed back once again and got within 3 points with around 2 minutes remaining. Three Rivers would make their free throws to close out the game and win 94-86.
This loss in the quarterfinal game of the Region 16 Tournament ends the Grizzlies season. West Plains finishes with a record of (10-21).
