Grizzlies pull out a win in second JUCO Challenge Game vs. Southwestern, IL & 1000th Game in Program History

The Missouri State West Plains Grizzlies played their 1000th game in program history this past Saturday night & their second match up in the JUCO Challenge. The Challenge hosted by Moberly Area Community College and played on the court of the Fitzsimmons-John Arena. Grizzlies were able to defeat the Southwestern, IL Blue Storm Kashmirs by a Score of 68-61.

1st Half: Javian Downey picks up the first foul of the game causing #23, Elsy for the Kashmirs to shoot two. One out of two is good. As SWIC runs pressure, a layup is up and good by #5, Wysinger. To turn things around, rebound a jump shot up and good by Javian Downey. And another layup up and good by #15, Zaheem Jackson. Javian draws up a foul for #33, Briles for SWIC. Early score is 6-3, SWIC leads. As ball is slapped away from Grizzlies, #1, Gulio Rigato shoots two free throws for SWIC. Both throws are good. Inbound play from Downey to #12, Kougnami is cut short. Grizzlies are able to rebound it and Downey puts the ball back up and in. Grizzlies now take the lead 10-5. Early on, five team fouls are called on Blue Storm. #33, Briles shoots the first three pointer of the game for SWIC. Another three is followed by Whitacker for the Grizzlies. Kougnami shoots a layup and a good three by #5 Shaun Glass, bringing the score closer for the Girzzlies. Grizzlies have the lead 20-10. Another foul is called for SWIC, bringiing up their sixth team foul. #0, Jaylen Hyson & #20, Blayne Harris come in for the Grizzlies. Zaheem tries a three, no good at first but recovers it. Another good three by #15, Zaheem Jackson. Score is 21-12, Grizzly lead with under eleven minutes to go. So far; SWIC still has six team fouls while Grizzlies only have three. Three pointer good for SWIC by #2, Brayden Cline. Shaun Glass tries to match it for the Grizzlies, no good. Gets the ball to #20, Harris up and good for the three finally after some passes underneath the Grizzly basket. #33, Lionel Kiumwimba makes it to the throw line after fouling Briles for SWIC. Lionel doesn’t make either attempt, but a lane violation on SWIC. Score is now 26-21, Grizzlies still have the lead. Free throw try by #12, Kougnami, no good on both tries by rebound by #20, Harris. Downey shoots two for Grizzlies, first is good. Second is no good. Kougnami chases down the loose ball, but eventually goes loose and Grizzlies will take their second turnover of the Game. #10, Jake Sage shoots a three pointer for the right wing. A jump shot up and good by #4, Daquan Little who eventually picks up a foul. SWIC now has their tenth foul of the game. Downey shoots two for the Grizzlies and makes both.  #2, Riley Whitacker is almost tied up following the rebound but calls time out before he can be fouled. A bucket up and good for #13, Ethan Smith. SWIC turns over the ball four the fourth time on rebound. Following a time-out, a jumper by #24 blocker for SWIC. A bucket attempt for #15, Zaheem but fouls underneath. #2 Ryan Richardson takes the ball on rebound and shoots a three which is good. And another three by #5, Shaun Glass. Another three by #10, Jake Sage. As SWIC gets this rebound, #24, Horras makes a dunk right as the clock runs out

AT THE HALF- MSU-WP Grizzlies: 42/ Southwestern, IL- SWIC: 32

2nd Half: #33 Briles gets another foul for SWIC as a jump shot is up and good by #12, Ergie Kougnami for the Grizzlies. Layup is good after a pass for #1, Rigoto for SWIC. After a few more passes and a missed foul by #2  Whitacker, another two buckets are made by Rigoto as SWIC seems to be playing possibly even more clock now than they have during the early part of the game. Some pass attempts by Zaheem Jackson for the Grizzlies as he tries to score he hands it off to #5, Shaun Glass who scores on a layup. Grizzlies are hurting themselves a bit in trying to reach out of bounds and pick up at least three more team fouls. Foul on a play by #2, Cline. Allows Zaheem to shoot two, giving Grizzlies two more points. Score is now 50-41 with Grizzlies still on top. Shaun Glass tries some three point attempts but doesn’t make them, Grizzlies correcting a mistake from yesterday and doing much better on rebounds. #10, Jake Sage comes in for #0, Hyson. #10, Sage makes his third three pointer. #33, Lionel Kiumwimba shoots two at the line. He makes one out of two. Ball goes out of bounds and Elsy picks up another foul for SWIC. Grizzlies now up by ten, 45-55. Under twelve minutes to go. A shot clock violation gives the ball back to SWIC. They try to shoot an inbound play but it’s fumbled by Jake Sage for the Grizzlies. #11, Javian Downey comes back in the game as #15, Zaheem Jackson goes out after fouling. #10 Jake Sage drills his fourth three pointer, the eleventh three ball for the Grizzlies in this game. The Grizzly lead is now 58-47. Jake Sage shoots a technical foul for the Grizzlies from the line. First is no good, second is. Sage now makes his thirteenth point of the game. #20, Lee Williams goes to the line and shoots two for SWIC and makes both. SWIC also gets the rebound. SWIC goes for another inbound score, but ball is rebounded by #33, Kiumwimba. Grizzlies end up making their tenth turnover of the game. But on offense, Grizzlies continue to contain the ball. And lefthanded shot by #10, Jake Sage is good but fouls. #44, Zach Chambers shoots two for SWIC and both are good. Lee Williams scores his fifth point on the night for SWIC on a layup. Score is now 59-54, still a Grizzly lead. Sage gets the ball back for the Grizzlies but short arms it on the up-shot. Demori Wisinger shoots another two for SWIC, both are good. Score is now 59-56. Grizzlies are now grappling with turnovers in attempts. However, SWIC to their credit is playing much stronger defense. A good two shot is up and good for #24, Horras. #20, Blayne Harris tries for three, no good. #33, Kiumwimba shoots a one in one and is short. SWIC rebound. Briles shoots two for SWIC. First one no good. Second ties up the game at 59. #11, Downey will shoot a one in one now as he fouls Briles. He is able to free the Grizzlies from this 59 point drag. SWIC on rebound but fumbles. Downey shoots another one in one but does not make it, a foul on SWIC. Lee Williams shoots two for SWIC, double bonus shot is no good. Rebound nearly controlled by Williams but stolen by Shaun Glass for the Grizzlies. Some passes underneath and stolen by Chambers for SWIC. Ball goes out of bounds, it will be Grizzly Basketball. Score is still 61-59. #12 Ergie Kougnami will shoot two, up and no good. With 3:07 to go, he finally makes one and puts the Grizzlies back up by three. WIth under two minutes to go, Grizzlies are able to cause Cline to foul on a play. #11, Javian Downey goes back to the line for the Grizzlies. Score is now 63-59 as Downey scores two more points. A few trips down the court allow Grizzlies to foul Lee Williams. Zaheem shoots two more. Rebound as Grizzlies come back on top by five. 28 seconds to go. Zaheem shoots again and now a seven point ballgame. He takes the ball in and back with no chance for either team to rebound as clock runs out.

FINAL SCORE– MSU-WP Grizzlies: 68/ Southwestern, IL- SWIC: 61, a win in The Grizzlies 1000th game in Basketball program history.
