Grizzlies sweep the ASU-Newport Aviators

The Missouri State West Plains Grizzlies faced the Arkansas State University-Newport Aviators on Tuesday night, November 19th, 2024. This was the second home game for The Grizzlies this season who took their third win by a score of 79-72

1st Half: Grizzlies make in on the board first with two three pointers, one by #1 Ryan Richardson & the other by #5, Shaun Glass. The Aviators rally back with a three ball of their own by #33, Roman Carlson. Grizzlies take an early 9-3 lead. As newport starts coming back in, as #35, Fowlds looks to shoot; #11 Javian Downey goes for a tackle and puts it up on in. A few handoffs & Shaun Glass makes his third three pointer of the night. On another set of bounds, Glass is also able to score on a rebound. As Grizzlies make it up by 16, Grizzlies starting forming a 1-2-2 zone and an easy basket by #25, Justin Gill. #15, Zaheem Jackson keeps looking to drive as Aviatiors are also spreading out their zone, but goes in for an easy wide open jump shot. As Grizzlies hang onto the ball, ball makes it to #13, Jake Sage who also scores on an easy basket. The third three pointer of the night is shot by #20, Blayne Harris. Score is now 23-11 Grizzlies. Make it 23-13 as as #25 Gill scores for the Aviators. A series of timeouts gives Grizzlies some time to discuss plays. Both Zaheem and Javian continue to be the leading scores in the 1st Half, Javian has at least sixteen in the game so far. At the throw line, Downey seems to not have as much luck but is still making easy outside shots.#33, Carlson for the Aviators appears to be leading scorer for the aviators who with under 3 minutes to go; is able to bring the Grizzly lead down to seven. Grizzlies start to quit rushing turnovers on the Grizzlies, allowing the Avaitors to attack on defense. Glass is able to score an easy jumper taking the Grizzlies out of this slow spell. Main threat to the Grizzlies in the back half of the game is #10, Nehemiah Redus who is fueling these attacks with some easy baskets for the Aviators. #12, Ergie Kougnami who seems to not be the primary scorer in this game continues to get some good steals along with #33, Lionel Kiumwimba. Ergie tires to score towards the end of the quarter but it’s cut short. Grizzlies still have the lead at the half 46-35

 

2nd Half: An inbound play and a good basket by the Aviators. Grizzlies make a few handoffs, Glass tries for a three but loses it. Sort of a struggle to keep the ball as Glass passes to both Downey and Richardson, but finally gets it back and shoots the Three making it a ten point game. Most of the action for the Aviators is coming from #35 Greg Fowlds. These are all easy baskets and also some progress at the free-throw line. A right wing three pointer by #10, Jake Sage gets things going as the Grizzly lead is now eight. A three pointer is good by #4, Kylen Kelly for the Aviators as Aviators seem to fight to keep up with the Grizzly offense. Another three pointer is shot by #24, James Blair for the Grizzlies, as this game takes a dramatic shift from a two point to a ten point game. The trail is broken by a good three pointer by #12 Ergie Kougnami for the Grizzlies. Some more points are made at the throw line by #10, Nehemiah Redus for the Grizzlies. On the steal, ball is stolen off of Gill for the Aviators and a spin move and score by #12, Ergie for the Grizzlies. In the last five minutes of play, Grizzlies look for a stop as #2, Riley Whitacker makes a good three. #25, Justin Gill who has fifteen points in the game brings the Aviator trail within five as the Aviators are having much better luck at the free throw line. Ergie Kougnami  & Jake Sage are able to round of the free throw shooting

*Grizzlies are able to up the Three point shooting tonight making a total of thirteen three pointers on the night.

Grizzlies will stay at home over the weekend as they will face the NE-Miss Tigers on Friday Night @ 7 PM & play their second match against the Southestern Iowa Blackhawks on Saturday Night. Both games will be on Hot Country, 102.5 KDY.
