The Missouri State-West Plains Grizzlies continued Reigon 16 play on Homecoming night as they played their third matchup against the Mineral Area Cardinals. Back on January 8th, Grizzlies defeated Cardinals by one point (82-81) & fell to The Cardinals @ Mineral Area on January 22nd, (65-50)
Tonight, they continue on what is now a two- game winning streak after defeating the State-Fair Roadrunners on Thursday night, (70-66). This time defeating the Cardinals, 73-61.
Summary:
1st Half: First bucket of the Game by #4 Jordyn Richard for the Cardinals. On the first possession for Grizzlies, Shaun Glass has it and puts it up for two to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Grizzlies continue to try to keep some momentum going and finally another two pointer by Ergie Kougnami to make it a 5-2 game. Rebound Cardinals and the game is condensed down to one as #3, Jordan Logan scores a bucket. While Cardinals are putting up a few shots in the early going this is allowing Grizzlies some room to take advantage. Three pointer by #5, Shaun Glass is good as he now puts the Grizzlies up for a four point lead. Rebound and a two handed dunk once again by #3, Logan for the Cardinals. #13, Ethan Smith knocks out the next inbound play and takes the ball in for his first bucket. Kept by the Grizzlies and a nice block and lay-in by #1, Ryan Richardson. Grizzlies continue to keep the ball and ball in spun in for a three once again by Richardson.
Ball tipped of the rim and good of by Jordyn Richard on the next possession for the Cardinals. Taken back by the Grizzlies and a nice floater over the head of #3, Logan for the Cardinals as now the Grizzly lead is 19-8 with under 10 minutes to go.A foul call and Richard shoots two at the line for the Cardinals, taken back and put in again by Richard. #2 Aaron Walker makes his first bucket for the Cardinals as the Game begins to settle. Mineral Area who had originally scored only about five points before the first three breaks now have eleven with about 7:42 to go. Left hand pass from Javian Downey to Ergie Kougnami is up and good as the Score is now 22-18. Wide open lay-in by Downey off the rebound is good. Stolen back by Preston Carter for the Cardinals. Reverse layup is good by Downey is good and now the press by Mineral Area is starting to ease a bit as the clock is now down to 5:46 to go in the First half. A foul and two more free throws by Scott are good. Rebound and layup good by #3, Logan, stolen and a move split and taken to the right by Ergie Kougnami is good.
Jordan Logan particularly begins to become an issue for the Grizzlies in the first half as he begins shooting a slew of buckets in the last five minutes. Also #4, Jordyn Richard poses issues as many of his shots seem to go right throw the middle and into areas where Grizzlies are not thinking to block. The Grizzly lead is now cut down to two, 32-30 with under a minute to go. #10, Joseph Scott ties up the Game with under 50 seconds to go. And this is where we leave it at the half.
HALFTIME- MSU-WP Grizzlies: 32/ Mineral Area Cardinals: 32
2nd Half: Jordyn Scott with the first two free throws of the Half. Taken back and Grizzlies are able to force a foul, this sends Ergie Kougnami to the line and makes 1-2 at the line. Joseph Scott pushes through and scores on an easy dunk as Mineral Area now takes the lead, 36-33. Ryan Richardson goes high of the board on the next possession and narrows the trail back down to one with a good two hander. Richardson keeps the momentum as he keeps it on the rebound and puts the ball up and in for three. Grizzly lead reduced back down to six by Jordan Logan as he sweeps in for two. Rebound and the Cardinals keep as Jordyn Richard sweeps in with a floater. Taken back and good fade away by Ergie, taken back by Cardinals for a two hander by Jordyn Richard. A good play by Scott for the Cardinals as he pushes past two defenders without a foul. Taken back by #13, Ethan Smith for a shot right before the shot clock which is good.
#2, Riley Whitacker with his first points on the night at the free throw line. Running layup is good by Preston Turner, making his thirteenth point of the night for the Cardinals. Ball goes back to Grizzlies for a long three which is good by #5, Shaun Glass as Grizzlies now lead by nine, 54-45. Mineral Area will spread out to a zone as they are now feeling the pressure to control multiple attempts for the three ball off Glass and Whitacker. With 9:26 to go, still neither team has made many turnovers. Grizzlies with no turnovers at all in the second half.
Ball reduced back down to a one point game with a three by #2, Aaron Walker. Taken back by Grizzlies with a slam by Ergie. Grizzlies keep dominating with excellent ball movement with two more great moves by #13, Ethan Smith & #33, Lionel Kiumwimba. Grizzlies hold the lead 61-64 with 6:43 to go. #13,Ethan Smith with another aggressive and impressive move in after Mineral Area cuts the lead by two. Excellent defense continuing to be played as Grizzlies continue to dominate. Mineral Area looks to throw it back in but taken and a big dunk by #10, Jake Sage puts Grizzlies up now by ten, 66-56. Mineral Area seems at this point to be not making near as many aggressive moves-in, only making most of their points in the second half at the free throw line. Free throw shooting is only part of the Grizzlies success overall in the Game for Shaun Glass as he has already made several threes and made two more at the line with about 3:55 to go.
