COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri football head coach Eliah Drinkwitz announced the addition of assistant coach Jacob Peeler to his staff on Tuesday. Peeler will coach the receivers with current assistant coach Bush Hamdan working with the quarterbacks moving forward.
“Coach Peeler has a proven ability to recruit and develop student-athletes,” Drinkwitz said. “Adding Jacob and his coaching experience is an opportunity to strengthen our staff, and utilize our coaching staff better moving forward.”
Peeler arrives in Columbia after two seasons as offensive coordinator at Texas State (2020-21), three seasons at Ole Miss (2017-19) and four seasons at California (2013-16). While in Oxford, he spent two seasons as receivers coach (2017, 2018) and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator working with the receivers prior to the 2019 season.
“I respect and appreciate the culture Coach Drinkwitz is building here at Missouri,” Peeler said. “It’s an exciting time for the program. I look forward to working with the staff and student-athletes as we strive for success, on and off the field.”
In Peeler’s two seasons at Texas State, the Bobcats produced eight offensive All-Sun Belt Conference honorees Additionally, offensive lineman Dalton Cooper was named second-team Freshman All-America by The Athletic following the 2020 season.
Under Peeler, the Bobcat offense increased its rushing output by nearly 65 percent from the previous season and averaged 369.7 total yards and 27.7 points per game in 2020. It was the most yards gained for the Bobcats since 2015 and the most points scored since 2014.
While at Ole Miss, Peeler coached two of the NFL’s best 2019 rookie wide receivers in Tennessee’s A.J. Brown and Seattle’s D.K. Metcalf. Brown ended his career as the school’s all-time leader with 2,984 receiving yards and 12 100-yard receiving performances. He is the only wide receiver in Ole Miss history with two 1,000-yard seasons. During Peeler’s tenure, Rebel receivers caught at least 39 passes five times and tallied at more than 600 yards receiving six times.
At Cal, he was a graduate assistant in 2013-14 before being promoted to assistant coach for inside receivers in 2015. Peeler helped turn Cal’s offense into one of the nation’s best, as the Golden Bears ranked in the NCAA’ top 10 leaders in passing offense, top 15 in total offense and top 25 in scoring offense for three straight seasons. Peeler’s coaching stops also include Louisiana Tech (2009-12) and Itawamba C.C. (2008).
Peeler played two seasons (2005-06) on the offensive line at Louisiana Tech and two seasons (2002-03) at Holmes C.C. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education Louisiana Tech (2007) and his master’s degree in kinesiology from Mississippi State (2008).
