Liberty Eagles volleyball off to hot start

The Varsity Liberty Lady Eagles are dominating their season thus far with a record of 10-2-2. The JV Lady Eagles currently stand at 7-0.

The season began at the first of September with a win over the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules. Varsity won 25-18, 25-16, 25-17. Peyton Bush had 11 kills, Kelstin Roy with 9, Lyla Cornman had 14 assists and 5 aces, Aspen Smothermanhad 11 digs for the game. The JV Lady Eagles won 25-17, 25-21. Savana Lovorn had 3 kills, Kenzie Tarlton had 3 aces, Shelby Acklin had 8 digs.

The first home game of the season took place on September 3 against the Lady Zizzers. Varsity won in 4 sets, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21. Bush had 14 digs and 16 kills, Shumpert and Cornman each had 23 assists. Bre Daniels had 3 aces. JV won in three sets 19-25, 25-18, 15-12. Maci Tharp and Lavorn had 4 kills each, Abbi Orchard had 7 aces and 10 assists, Acklin had 11 digs.

On September 10 the Lady Eagles defeated the Eminence Lady Redwings in three sets 25-22, 25-15, 25-16. Roy had 12 kills, Daniels had 5 aces, Cornman had 20 assists. The JV Lady Eagles won in tw sets 25-15, 25-14. Tharp led with 4 kills and 6 assists, Acklin with 5 aces and 6 digs.

The Lady Eagles participated in the Zizzer Show Down on Saturday, September 12. The Lady Eagles went 4-1-2 on the day and ended with second place in pool play. The Eagles defeated the Lady Zizzers in three sets in the quarterfinals and upset the number one seed, Blair Oaks in the semi-finals.

“I’m super proud of the heart we saw today,” commented Head Coach Shari Tune on the day. “These girls never quit and it was super intense and fun to watch.”

Picking up another win on September 17 the Lady Eagles defeated the Winona Lady Wildcats. Varsity won in 4 sets 25-14, 25-16, 16-25, 25-20. Bush had 13 kills, Shumpert had 12, Smotherman with 17 digs and 3 aces, Cornman had 22 assists. The JV won in two sets 25-14, 25-14. Acklin had 3 aces and 9 digs, Kinzie Tomey had 3 blocks.

For the first SCA game of the season, the Lady Eagles hosted the Ava Lady Bears on September 22. Varsity won in three sets 25-13, 25-5, 25-9. Bush had 11 kills, Roy with 10, Daniels with 7 aces. JV won in two sets 25-21, 25-15. Watts had 6 aces, Acklin with 5.

Dropping their first regular season and conference match, the Lady Eagles fell to the Cabool Lady Bulldogs on Thursday, September 24, 25-15, 25-16, 20-25, 17-25, 12-15. Bush led with 18 kills, Shumpert with 8 blocks and 23 assists. The JV picked up a win at Cabool 25-22, 13-25, 15-7. Tarlton led with 7 kills and 4 aces, Orchard with 9 assists and Acklin with 10 digs.

Traveling to Houston on September 29, the Lady Eagles came away with the win. The Varsity Lady Eagles won in three sets 25-16, 25-16, 25-9. Roy had 8 aces, Shumpert with 15 kills. The JV won in two very close sets 25-23, 28-26. Lavorn had 8 kills, Orchard and Tarlton each had 4 aces, Acklin had 12 digs.

Next up for the Lady Eagles is an away game at Salem tonight, October 1.
