COLUMBIA, Mo. – On Monday, the Southeastern Conference announced the recipients of this week’s honors. Mizzou freshman shortstop Jenna Laird was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season, leading all SEC freshmen.
Laird smashed the go-ahead two-run home run on Sunday to secure the series win over the No. 17/15 Tennessee Volunteers. She hit safely in all three games of the series and batted .375 in the series with a .500 on base percentage, a home run and two RBI.
The Long Island native led all freshmen in SEC play in batting average, hits, on base percentage, slugging percentage, extra-base hits, stolen bases, runs and total bases.
She has started all 51 games for Mizzou at shortstop. On the season, Laird is batting .406 with 12 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 37 RBI, a .455 on base percentage and a .638 slugging percentage. She is 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts to begin her career.
Laird and the Tigers will be in action on Thursday in the SEC Tournament. Mizzou’s opponent is still to be determined. The estimated game time is 1:35 p.m. CT on SEC Network. It will begin 35 minutes after the conclusion of the 11 a.m. game.
