Mizzou Volleyball Promotes Alyssa Munlyn to Volunteer Assistant Coach

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou Volleyball four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American and recent graduate assistant, Alyssa Munlyn, has been promoted to volunteer assistant coach, announced Thursday by head coach Joshua Taylor.

“Transitioning Alyssa to the volunteer assistant position is big time for Mizzou Volleyball,” said Taylor. “She will now be able to provide technical feedback to our student-athletes, which she was previously unable to conduct due to NCAA rules during her role as a graduate assistant. Her knowledge of the game paired with the ability to communicate effectively will greatly benefit our players’ development. She sees the game well and I’m so excited that now she will get to coach it as well. Our coaching staff just got a lot stronger!”

Munlyn served as a graduate assistant on the Mizzou coaching staff each of the past two seasons. From 2015-18 as a Tiger student-athlete, she completed one of the most decorated careers in program history, becoming Mizzou’s first four-time AVCA All-American. As one of the NCAA and Southeastern Conference’s most dominant defensive forces, Munlyn concluded her Mizzou career as the program’s all-time leader in total blocks (634), block assists (516) and blocks per set (1.27). Additionally, her 118 career solo blocks rank second all-time.

The Suwanee, Georgia, native was also one of the nation’s most efficient attackers at middle blocker, ranking first all-time in Mizzou history with a .388 hitting percentage. Munlyn holds three of the program’s top 10 single-season hitting percentage performances, led by an outstanding .424 mark (second all-time) in 2016.

Munlyn’s blocking dominance was simply staggering, as she holds Mizzou’s top four single-season total block performances. Her sensational 2017 junior campaign may never be reproduced, as her 189 total blocks, 159 block assists and 1.44 blocks per set all place first all-time in program history.

Munlyn jumped onto the national scene with a magnificent 2015 freshman campaign, tallying 241 kills on .357 hitting with 149 total blocks, 25 solo blocks and 124 block assists. She joined Carly Kan as the only Tigers in program history to earn both SEC Freshman of the Year and AVCA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year accolades.

Munlyn’s name will be found all over the Mizzou Volleyball record book for years to come. She holds the Tigers’ all-time single-match total block record, as she posted 13 total blocks on two separate occasions (vs. Arkansas – Nov. 19, 2017 // vs. BYU – Sept. 1, 2017). Munlyn’s eye-popping .833 hitting percentage (10 kills, 0 errors, 12 attacks) vs. No. 23 Arizona (Nov. 30, 2018) stands as the program’s all-time hitting mark in NCAA postseason history.

The Tiger middle blocker was named AVCA Southeast All-Region and All-SEC all four years in Mid-Missouri. Munlyn received 11 weekly awards from the SEC office over her career and was also named to the conference’s academic honor roll all four years.
