Multiple delays and penalties as Houston travels to Salem for Conference Opener

Houston Tigers traveled to Salem Missouri this Friday, September 13th, 2024 to play the Salem Tigers. Houston won the game by a score of 28-7

1st Quarter: After a successful punt, Tigers score a 37-yard pass from CJ Riley to Jordan Arthur. As Salem gets the ball, they attempt to outrun the Tigers a run-heavy offense. Houston ends up succeeding to get Salem to turn over on downs. Midway through the Quarter, a Salem player did sustain an injury. It is unknown who this player was. As the game continues. There were a few delays including the injured player and some questionable holding calls. At the Quarter’s end, The Houston Tigers lead 7-0.

2nd Quarter: At the Quarter’s start, CJ Riley makes a 9-yard carry bringing the Tigers into a 14-0 lead with a successful extra point conversion. At around 8:43 to go, Houston takes a 15-yard, roughing the passer penalty. As Salem gets the ball back, Salem later picks up a 45 yard penalty. Eventually they end up punting the ball at getting it down to the 24 yard-line. Much like the last quarter, refs continue to call some questionable holding and penalty calls. Neither has yet to pick up a consistent pace as yet. Houston finally makes a complete pass but still not enough to pick up a 1st down. They eventually go through a few more downs and picked up yet another penalty. Score remains 14-0, Houston continuing to lead. Luckily as play resumes, a 13-yard run from CJ Riley to Jordan Arthur…. But a flag is thrown. Completion and touchdown pass are taken away. Houston takes a 4th & 11. The penalty call claims Riley and Arthur nearly ran into each other. Houston gets the ball down to the 7 &11 yard line to finish out the quarter.

At the Half- Houston leads Salem 14-0

3rd Quarter: With not even a minute to go into the Quarter, Salem calls for a time out. Houston gets the ball down to about the 45 before…. you guessed it, a holding call on Houston backing them up to the 37 bringing them up to a 2nd down & 17. Salem finally picks up a 1st down, getting down to the 33 yard-line. After picking up about eight yards after another attempted 1st down, Salem replays the down. Salem fumbles the ball and Houston gets it back. After a few more delays and yet another injured Salem player, the game now has consumed at least 21 penalties. The additional injured player is hauled off by stretcher with what seems to be a lower body injury. Jordan Arthur ends up making another Touchdown run bringing the score up to 21-0 with another successful extra point conversion. Salem finally makes a 65- yard touchdown pass from Hayden Ragsdale to Evan Mendenhall. This brings the score to 21-7. Salem takes a penalty for a late hit bringing up a 1st & 3rd for Houston. Salem’s #35- Hovey sustained a small leg cramp injury. Jordan Arthur eventually picks up a 1st-down at the 15-yard line. A flag is thrown. Refs hastily making their way to talk both teams’ coaches.

4th Quarter: Jordan Arthur scores another five- yard run with a good extra-point, this brings the score to 28-7. Another penalty… Salem will take up a 1st & 20. The quarter continues to pick up a few more penalties which is pretty much the story of the game by this point. Both teams decide to run clock to fill up the rest of the time and not give another reason for another flag to be thrown. FINAL SCORE- Houston Tigers: 28/ Salem Tigers: 7
