The NCAA has established a new standard timing protocol for all college football games after Michigan’s controversial win over Western Michigan this past Saturday night.
A memo from NCAA national coordinator of officials Ron Snodgrass said the official time for all college football games will be displayed on the in-stadium game clock.
The memo continued, “When a replay review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the replay official’s decision will be based on the embedded game clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official will use the game-clock graphic displayed as part of the broadcast feed.”
If this was established, the Wolverines would not have won this past Saturday. On what appeared to be the final play of the game, Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood threw a hail mary out of the end zone and into a Western Michigan defender’s hands.
TV replays showed the clock was at zero, but Big Ten officials put one second back on the clock. On the final play, Underwood threw a touchdown and Michigan won 13-12.
