NFL: The Redskins Are Definitely Changing Their Name. ‘Redtails’ is the Favorite Name of Oddsmakers

The Washington Redskins announced, officially, that they will indeed drop the team name, but no word yet on the replacement.

The team said, “Today we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo.”

Multiple sponsors have urged the team to drop it out of respect to Native Americans, and some retailers have stopped selling merchandise featuring the name.

Owner Dan Snyder has been working with coach Ron Rivera on possibilities.

The Warriors, the Redtails, and the Red Wolves are three possible names. The team said they are planning to keep the same colors, burgundy and gold.

The current favorite of online oddsmakers is “Redtails.” At 3/1, that name has a 25% chance of being the winner, according to Casino.org. A $10 winning bet returns $30.

“Generals” follows at 4/1, “Presidents” at 5/1, “Lincolns” at 8/1, and “Veterans” at 8/1.

Redskins.com is still the team’s official site. The team is considering using a generic name along the lines of “Washington Football Club” during the transition.

These fans think the new team name should be the ‘Warriors’ or ‘Redtails’.

The Navajo Nation is applauding the decision of the Redskins to drop the name,  saying: “July 13, 2020 is now a historic day for all Indigenous peoples around the world. The NFL Washington-based team officially announced the retirement of the racist and disparaging ‘Redskins’ team name and logo.”

The Navajo nation even has a suggestion for a new team name — The Washington Code Talkers.

A statement from the Nation said, ”Renaming the team ‘Code Talkers’ to honor the Navajo Code Talkers, and other tribal nations who used their sacred language to help win World War II would set the team on a path to restoring its reputation and correcting the historical misrepresentation of Indigenous peoples.”
