COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 19 Mizzou Softball could not recover from Kansas’ late-game rally, falling by a score of 4-3.
The first inning was quick, with three-up and three-down for Kansas. Mizzou had runners at first and second in the bottom of the first, but nothing to show for it with a third out on a fielder’s choice.
After a scoreless first inning, Kansas jumped on top with a solo homerun from Ashlyn Anderson with two outs in the top of the second.
Things started heating up in the third inning, when Mizzou had a short two-out rally. Hatti Moore hit her 14th home run of the season, bringing in two runs. After a Kansas single in the bottom of the inning, the Tigers ended things quickly with a 5-4-3 double play followed by a ground out to shortstop, Jenna Laird.
TURNING POINT
In the top of the fifth, Kansas was able to take the lead. With the bases loaded, a one-out single through the right side put two runs on the board for the Jayhawks. Another single to left field brought home an additional run, putting the score at 4-2 for Kansas. Jordan Weber entered and retired the next two batters to limit the damage.
Missouri got one back in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single from Casidy Chaumont, scoring Brooke Wilmes. However, the Tigers left a lot to be desired in the inning, leaving the bases loaded.
Mizzou made sure not to have a repeat of the fifth inning. It was three-up, three-down for Kansas, with Jordan Weber throwing two strikeouts. The Tigers forced Kansas to change pitchers in the bottom of the sixth after Kendyll Bailey singled through the left side.
TOP TIGERS
Hatti Moore had a big afternoon for the Tigers. The senior catcher hit her 14th home run of the season. She also threw out a runner stealing second.
Jordan Weber had three strikeouts and did not let in any runs during her 2.2 innings pitched, giving the Tigers a chance to regain the lead.
Abby George recorded her ninth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
NOTES
Hatti Moore blasted her 32nd-career home run, moving into a tie for eighth in Mizzou history.
Brooke Wilmes stole a base in the bottom of the fifth inning, improving to 14 stolen bases this season. She currently leads the Tigers in stolen bases for the season.
