On Saturday, Tiger Woods posted his highest score ever in the PGA Championship and later withdrew from a major for the first time in his pro career.
Hours after Woods limped his way to a 9-over 79 in the third round at Southern Hills in Oklahoma, he informed the PGA of America of his withdrawal.
Woods was 21 shots behind Mito Pereira of Chile, who takes a three-shot lead into the final round.
Justin Thomas Wins the PGA Championship after Massive Comeback
Justin Thomas was 7 shots behind in the PGA Championship when he mounted a major comeback in his final round yesterday.
Thomas hit a shank on the sixth hole. Then he made a 65-foot birdie putt that began his record-tying comeback. He missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole that he feared would cost him. He never led until one hole remained in his three-hole playoff with Will Zalatoris.
There had not been a playoff in a major since the 2017 Masters, when Sergio Garcia beat Justin Rose. The 19 straight majors without a playoff was the longest streak in major championship history.
Thomas closed at 14-1 to win the PGA Championship at Caesars Sportsbook. His odds were as long as 28-1 entering Sunday’s final round.
Out of the 22 players to win multiple PGA Championships, Thomas, 29, is just the fifth to win the event twice before turning 30 years old.
