Red Sox 6, Royals 2

The Royals were walked off in their series opener in Boston. Kansas City surrendered a walk-off grand slam in a 6-2 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Carlos Hernandez was charged with his seventh loss after letting up the bases-clearing homer.

The Royals were frustrated by a controversial check-swing call made by first base umpire Vic Carapazza. He ruled Sox second baseman Luis Urias didn’t swing on a 3-2 fastball from Royals reliever Carlos Hernandez. The inning would’ve ended the 9th in a 2-2 game. The next at-bat, Red Sox shortstop Pablo Reyes hit a walk-off grand slam

Cole Ragans struck out a career-high 11 batters in 6 2/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox. Ragans has shined since being acquired from the Texas Rangers in the Aroldis Chapman trade.

In three starts with the Royals he’s allowed two earned runs in 17.2 innings while striking out 22 and walking just four with an ERA of 1.02 in Kansas City.

The Royals fell to 36-and-78. They will send right-hander Brady Singer to the mound against Boston tonight. He will start opposite Red Sox righty Kutter Crawford.
